Impact of Federal Government Shutdown on Essential Services and Housing Assistance

The federal government shutdown has lasted almost a month, and it is affecting millions of people across the country.

Some states are struggling to find ways to make up for missing support, like food aid and child development programs, because of the shutdown.

For example, federal funding for SNAP (food stamps) and a group of Head Start preschool programs is expected to run out by Saturday.

Help for mothers and babies through WIC (the Women, Infants, and Children program) could end the following week.

How Housing Assistance Is Affected

Section 8, or the Housing Choice Voucher Program, helps families with low income, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities pay for housing.

  • Good news: Section 8 will continue operating at least through mid-November 2025.
  • What could happen if the shutdown continues:
    • New vouchers may not be given out.
    • Lease renewals could be at risk.
    • Housing inspections and new applications for assistance will be on hold until the government reopens.

If you already receive Section 8 help, you still need to pay your portion of the rent during the shutdown.
