Automatic Savings on Utility Bills for Selected U.S. Citizens

It’s funded by the state’s Cap-and-Trade program, where major polluters must buy permits for their greenhouse gas emissions.
Money from those permit auctions is returned to consumers, and about 80% of it is shared evenly among residential customers.
Who qualifies
- Most households and small businesses served by California’s major utilities
- Nearly all residential customers of PG&E, Southern California Edison (SCE), and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), including customers with solar panels
- Small businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations receive the credit on their electricity bills
Do you need to apply?
No. The credit is automatic. There’s no paperwork.
When you’ll see the credit
- Electricity bills: April and October
- Natural gas bills: April
How much you could get (by utility)
- PG&E: $116.46 total per year ($58.23 in April and $58.23 in October)
- SCE: $112.00 total per year ($56.00 in April and $56.00 in October)
- SDG&E: $162.76 total per year ($81.38 in April and $81.38 in October)
- Pacific Power: $518.72 total per year ($259.36 in April and $259.36 in October)
Bottom line
If you get service from one of these utilities, watch your April and October bills for the California Climate Credit.
You don’t need to do anything to receive it, and for some customers—especially those with Pacific Power—it can add up to significant savings over the year.
