Getting affordable housing through the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program can be a big help for low-income families.

Every month, local and state housing offices across the country open up waitlists for families who need this assistance. These lists fill up fast, so it's important to know when and where to apply.

Below is a simple guide to some places that will open their Section 8 and similar program waitlists in August 2025.

Key Locations with Open Waitlists in August 2025

Louisiana

  • Alexandria Housing Authority: The waitlist for Section 8 Project-Based Voucher units with 3 to 5 bedrooms opened on August 11, 2025. Applications will be accepted until further notice. This is a good chance for larger families in Alexandria to find housing assistance.

Massachusetts

  • Worcester Housing Authority: Several public housing waitlists are open all through August 2025. Different options are available for different types of households, and application periods are ongoing. Worcester residents should apply as soon as they can.

California

  • Statewide: As of August 12, 2025, there are 11 Housing Choice Voucher waitlists open in California. Each local housing office has its own rules and deadlines, so applicants should contact their local authority for details.
  • Contra Costa County: The Project-Based Voucher waitlist is open until August 14, 2025. This program is similar to Section 8, but rental assistance is connected to specific housing properties.

Hawaii

  • Hawaii County Office of Housing and Community Development: The waitlist for Housing Choice Vouchers reopened on August 1, 2025. Because demand is high, it’s best to apply as soon as possible.

Tips and Important Notes

  1. Apply Quickly: Many waitlists only accept applications for a short period, sometimes just a few days, before they close. Check your local housing authority website often to stay updated.
  2. Preferences: Some waitlists give priority to seniors, people with disabilities, veterans, or local residents.
  3. Apply in Multiple Places: You can be on more than one waitlist in different cities and states at once. There’s no national limit.
  4. No Fees: Applying for Section 8 is always free. If anyone asks you to pay, it's probably a scam.

How to Apply

Be ready to provide documents like proof of income, details about everyone in your household, and proof if you qualify for preferences (such as disability or veteran status).

Each housing authority might need different information and will have its own application period, so watch the deadlines carefully.
